67Located in the small village of Leeds near the county town of Maidstone, Leeds castle is probably the most well known castle in Kent. Leeds castle and its gardens expand across a large area of the Kent countryside estimated to be some 500 acres.
Leeds castle was built in 1119 by the Norman, Robert de Crevecoeur. King Edward I of England was the first known royal to reside in Leeds Castle along with his medieval queen Eleanor of Castile.
In 1321, King Edward II of England captured Leeds Castle from the Baroness Badlesmere, who was left in charge of the castle by her husband Lord Badlesmere. After the battle, the king’s wife, Isabella of France another medieval queen, was known to have resided in the castle. The castle was also owned by wife of King Edward III of England, Margaret of France the third medieval queen to reside in Leeds castle.
King Richard II of England is known to have given Leeds castle as a present to his much adored wife Anne of Bohemia. The Leeds castle became a Royal Palace under its most famous occupant King Henry the VIII of England, who transformed the castle in 1512 for his first wife Catherine of Aragon.
Leeds castle in its history, has not been a castle of war, and is well known as a castle of love, partly due to its extensive list of female residents. The castle was a Royal Palace until 1552 when Sir Anthony St Leger, the Lord Deputy of Ireland, became the new owner. It has remained in private hands since.
In recent years the castle has become a popular wedding venue and a tourist attraction open to the public almost every day. The venue is in high demand for weddings, such that if you wish to get married at Leeds castle, booking well in advance is recommended.
The castle contain many beautiful gardens, a must see maze, aviary containing over 100 species of birds and probably the world’s only dog collar museums. You also have an opportunity experience the pay and play Leeds Castle golf course. The castle also runs courses to teach the art of falconry.
Leeds castle is also popular for hot air balloon rides, which take off shortly after sunrise or before sunset during the summer months. A balloon ride is an ideal way to experience the beautiful country side surrounding Leeds castle.
In November, on Guy Fawkes Night, the castle hosts a magnificent fireworks display to music, set against the backdrop of the castle and the moat. It is an experience not to be missed.
